HOME at Van Andel Institute

Created by Tracy Ginsberg and Theodore Lillie, HOME is a multidisciplinary, outdoor installation combining interactive sculpture, large-scale photography and video projections and a participatory sound component. Exploring the intersection of human and natural habitats, HOME immerses viewers in a dense forest with 20 ft videos projected onto walls, a giant redwood tree nest and an original score with viewers' voices, owl hoots and sampled music. The sculpture is 10ft tall and 15ft in diameter, built of lumber, steel, re-claimed redwood and photographs. Viewers enter the work by climbing up a ship-ladder. Inside the open-air room, viewers sit on a circular bench surrounded by a panoramic photo-mural of an old growth redwood forest. Whether standing within the installation or perched inside the nest, one experiences a bird's eye view of endangered species in their native environment. Viewers add their voice to the score by recording "fly away home" on site, which is later mixed into the music. Video projections illuminate the building and can be seen from a distance.
