About the Work
Beyond Movement Moving Beyond is a multi-media, site-specific installation and performance created for The Rose Wagner Center for the Performing Arts, Salt Lake City, Utah, 2008. The piece presents the Tara Trinity birthing from the cosmic web.
The installation features an interactive, webbed cocoon made of knitted pods; web threads and pods crisscross the theater and cling to the theater entrance, columns, ceiling, walls and windows; transparent, suspended veils with oil paint, silkscreens and photographs hang from the threads, creating multiple layers of translucent imagery and paneled sections of space; large-scale video projections and a suspended television play a video loop of the Butoh performance by Yu Shin Chen, Tammy M. Starr and Liberty Valentine to Alice Coltrane's music "Journey to Shivananda."
The performance is ongoing. When viewers enter the theater lobby they are immersed in a multi-media installation with one performer inside a knitted web. When the audience exits for intermission, three performers, tangled together in red string inside the webbed cocoon, break through the pods and threads to explore the installation and the audience. The Taras then lead the crowd back into the theater where the stage is set with correlating visual art for modern dance piece, "Letting Go of the One I Used to Be" by Javier Cordoba.
