About the Work

Viriditas: n. from the Latin viridis, for 'green,' + veritas for 'truth.' Also ver/veris = spring & the production of spring.

Viriditas is a multidisciplinary, site-specific installation including a living earthwork, photography murals and music by Hildegard of Bingen.

Viewers arrive at the installation by following a golden web of knit forms and threads that encircle the building and cross through the gallery, leading towards music coming from the cavernous project space. Once inside, viewers discover an immersive forest setting with a highway line (yellow brick road) leading through the woods. Close inspection reveals growing moss and ferns. Photosynthesis is sustained by daily hand misting and artificial light enabling.

A tribute to Hildegard of Bingen, an environmentalist and visionary who married art, spirituality and science, Viriditas opened on International Water Day at Spur Projects, Portola Valley, CA, 2007.
